Daraz label printing and PDF optimizer
A case study on building a desktop automation tool with Electron, React, and Node.js to optimize e-commerce shipping label layouts.
The problem with standard label generation
The Daraz e-commerce seller platform exports shipping labels in an inefficient layout, placing a single label onto a full A4 page. High-volume merchants face significant paper waste, elevated ink overhead, and slow fulfillment cycles.
Manually cropping, copying, and rearranging PDF labels using generic graphic editors created a severe operational bottleneck during daily order preparation. Merchants needed an automated tool that could consolidate multiple labels onto single pages without compromising barcode scan rates or exposing customer data to cloud servers.
What I built
As a full-stack web developer and frontend engineer, I built a cross-platform desktop application using Electron.js, React, and Node.js to automate shipping label layout nesting.
The application intercepts standard PDF exports, isolates individual label components, and realigns them into print-optimized layouts entirely on the local client machine.
- Offline file system integration. Used Node.js file system APIs within Electron to process bulk PDF files locally, ensuring complete customer data privacy and offline operational capability.
- Automated page nesting engine. Built a rasterization and layout engine that converts input PDF pages into high-resolution image layers, intelligently fitting two to three labels onto a single A4 sheet.
- Page filtering user interface. Developed a responsive React and Bootstrap interface that allows merchants to preview PDF pages and exclude non-label pages, such as invoices and instruction sheets, before rendering.
- Barcode fidelity preservation. Enforced high-DPI image pipeline controls to ensure output PDF labels maintain sharp contrast, keeping barcodes fully scannable by logistics scanners.
What shipped and impact
The desktop utility converted a slow manual editing task into a two-click automated workflow completed in under five seconds per batch.
Local merchants utilizing the tool cut paper and toner expenses by up to 60%, removing fulfillment delays during high-volume sales events.
Manually editing PDF label layouts used to drain time and waste paper every morning. Automating page nesting into a local desktop tool cut printing costs by 60% while speeding up daily dispatch.
What I would do differently
The current build targets standard A4 desktop printers. Adding native support for 4x6 inch thermal label rolls will expand hardware compatibility for merchants using dedicated thermal printers.
In addition, connecting directly to system print queues through native Node.js print bindings will remove the intermediate PDF viewer step, sending optimized jobs directly to the physical printer.
